I had an interview and completed the common appMay 14 2014Biology
I had an interview and completed the common app. I also took a tour, attended an overstay program, and went to a dessert reception and met president Trible. He sent my name to the Dean of the College of Science and I was able to pick some classes I wanted to sit in as well as meet some professors. If you want to get in be sure to do an interview and attend as many admission related programs/events as possible. Also be a great student who is highly involved on your high school campus.

CNU started out as a local school, perfect forApr 17 2014Biology
CNU started out as a local school, perfect for the community in which it was located. They had a large number of night classes, and many of the students worked at Newport News Shipbuilding. Christopher Newport's acceptance rate was quite high then; even those who didn't do well in high school were accepted.

The school continued to value the local community members until about 2000 or so, when they began focusing more on out-of-state students (more money, you know).

CNU has grown too big for its britches. It is not a high-ranked school, and is not a national university. They allow incoming freshmen to turn in application fee waivers, but refuse to accept such waivers for transfer students. What this means is that if you don't have the money to begin with, they don't want you.

You will be hard-pressed to find another school that will not allow a student with financial difficulties to have a fee waiver. Most colleges allow such students fee waivers.

Do yourself a favor: if you are considering CNU, check out Old Dominion University first; they treat transfer students well, have merit scholarships, allow app fee waivers and are just a better school all around. Old Dominion University also has more programs that are more competitive than those at CNU.

CNU is just not the friendly, welcoming place that it used to be; it is focused on money and the students who bring more money. Exhaust all of your other possibilities before choosing Christopher Newport University.

AP classes are very important, I had a 4Jun 18 2013Music - Performance
AP classes are very important, I had a 4.3 GPA over all 4 yrs and a 4.7 my senior year. You will need a min. If a 1250 SAT to get any scholarship money here, get into anything like honors and maybe even to get in, period. Most people including myself were members of at least 2 honor societies in high school also. They look at that here pretty heavily.

Initially, grades alone got you into cnuJun 16 2013Unknown
Initially, grades alone got you into cnu. People from the sticks who were given a's got in. This explained the high number of 'honor roll' students with crappy sat scores managing to find their way into the school. Now, if you don't have at least a 1200 sat, at the very least, dont count on acceptance. Some of my personal friends have turned down UVA and Georgetown for Christopher Newport University. Nothing is a sure bet now.
